The Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in 2000, is one of the most extensive marine protected areas in the Western Hemisphere. It is located in the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, at the far edge of the Caribbean Sea.
This archipelago represents approximately 34 percent of the Colombian Caribbean’s territorial sea, making Seaflower a strategic space both environmentally and geopolitically. Its vast extension and natural richness position it as one of the most important marine reserves in the region.

Exceptional Ecological Wealth
With more than 2,300 registered marine species, Seaflower hosts the third largest reef system in the Caribbean, extensive mangroves, wide seagrass meadows, and numerous cays and islets that serve as refuge for migratory birds.
These ecosystems fulfill vital functions: Protection of coasts against storms and hurricanes, Support of artisanal fishing, Conservation of species such as sea turtles, sharks and rays, Regulation of marine ecological balance.
