Fort Warwick - Warwick Viewpoint

Warwick Fort, also known as the Fort of Freedom, is a historic defensive site in Santa Catalina from which the islands were protected during periods of armed conflict. Rebuilt by engineer Agustín Codazzi, it later became the headquarters of the French corsair Louis Aury and the place where the Colombian flag was first raised on June 23, 1822. Some of the cannons used in those battles can still be seen at the site.

This fortress, used by pirates in the 17th century, houses two cannons that, according to local history, have remained there since the 18th century, when the pirate Henry Morgan used the location to watch for enemy ships and safeguard his treasures. Beneath the structure lies Morgan’s Cave. The surrounding ecosystem is predominantly dry forest, typical of Santa Catalina Island, where reptiles such as the endemic blue lizard can be observed. Today, the site also serves as a scenic viewpoint overlooking the port of Santa Isabel and the island’s sea.
